Chief Artist of Community

Rufus Woods joins the Be Clearly team as a longtime civic leader who devotes his time and energy to fostering and celebrating community building throughout North Central Washington. He spent 35 years in journalism as reporter, columnist, editor and publisher of The Wenatchee World. His civic resume includes helping lead and support a community effort with the Wenatchee Rotary Club to change public perception of the value of WestSide High School, chairing the Proposition One campaign that led to a successful vote in North Central Washington to cure the bond default of the Town Toyota Center, co-chairing the successful $8.6 million Foothills Campaign led by the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust and the Trust for Public Lands, and most recently serving on the leadership team for the successful $3.4 million redevelopment of Kiwanis Methow Park.

As Publisher Emeritus of The Wenatchee World, he writes regular columns focusing on creative community building, and also has a podcast and blog devoted to deepening the sense of community engagement and involvement in the region. Rufus was trained in Appreciative Inquiry — a possibility-focused approach to community and professional challenges. The approach is succinctly summed up in the words of Teddy Roosevelt: “Do what you can, with what you’ve got, where you are.” It’s the approach he brings to his writing and civic work.

Time and time again, he has observed that constructive community engagement, finding common ground, celebrating what is working and collaborating to build a healthier future is a powerful and effective approach that creates a greater sense of ownership in the community. He believes that what makes this region special is the sense of giving back to the community that has always existed in North Central Washington.
